In the year 2007, Naturopathic physicians in Washington State were granted the right to prescribe most drugs commonly dispensed in a family practice setting (testosterone and codeine being the notable exceptions).
A goal of most, if not all, naturopathic doctors is to treat the root cause of illness and avoid the use of suppressive drugs. However, it is occasionally necessary to rely on orthodox western pharmaceuticals. In my practice, the most commonly prescribed drug is natural desiccated thyroid (Nature-Throid and Armour Thyroid, for example). I also prescribe bio-identical hormones on occasion. Rarely will I see the need to prescribe an antibiotic.
